What’s Movember All About?

It’s that time of year again! Men all around the world will be sporting glorious moustaches throughout Movember. But what’s it all about? Why does it matter? This blog post aims to shine a light on Movember’s important cause and outline ways that everyone can get involved, moustache or no moustache.

I’ll be taking part once again, but I wanted to add an additional challenge. As well as growing a moustache, I’ll be giving up chocolate for the whole month. It won’t be easy, but I want to make an effort for a very important cause.

What is Movember?

For a number of reasons, men around the world are dying too young. This health crisis is often stigmatised and overlooked. As a leading charity for men, Movember has been “changing the face of men’s health” since 2003, addressing physical and mental health issues including testicular cancer, prostate cancer and suicide prevention.

Key statistics:

  • We lose a man to suicide every minute of every day
  • 2 out of 3 suicides are men (3 out of 4 in the UK)
  • We lose over 1400 men to suicide every day
  • 800,000 men are living with testicular cancer
  • Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer among young men
  • Over 10 million men are living with prostate cancer
  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK
  • The life expectancy of males is 4.5 years less than females

In addition to preventing deaths, Movember focuses on men’s quality of life and sparking important conversations. The foundation is uniquely placed to unite experts and address these issues globally. The money raised funds ground-breaking and life-saving projects. Click here to learn more about them.

The ISL Mo Bros

I’m proud to be part of the International School of London’s Mo Bros team. As well as raising lots of money for Movember, we’re considering our role as teachers to educate and raise awareness. These rich conversations have already started and the team looks forward to collaborating throughout Movember and beyond.

Get involved!

Movember is best known for its moustaches, but there are many ways for everyone to get involved, including Mo Sistas. There’s still time to get your Mo Space page up and running before Movember properly kicks off. Even better, get a team together! How will you take part?

  • Grow a moustache
  • Take on a Move challenge
  • Give something up
  • Host a Mo-ment
  • Mo your own way

There are loads of ideas and resources on the Movember website, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to get started as an individual or team.

Of course, there’s one other way to help that will only take a minute…

Support me!

I know it’s not quite November yet, but is anyone willing to get me off the mark? My goal is to individually raise £250. I would really appreciate your support. Please visit my Mo Space page to make a donation. If you’d prefer to wait and donate later, you can follow my Movember progress on social media. Whatever you can give, I really appreciate your support! Thank you!
